%X This paper aims to analyze the spatial and temporal water body variability in Anavilhanas archipelago, an anabranching reaches in the Negro River. Altimetry data from mission Envisat and multispectral images of Landsat 5 was used to evaluate the flood-pulse and extreme climatic events between 2002 and 2010. Twelve Landsat 5 images were acquired during the high and low water phases. The water body classification was made using a threshold on short-wave Infrared band. Altimetry data allowed identify the hydrologic cycle upstream and downstream of the archipelago. The images acquired between the flood of 2009 and the drought of 2010 showed a huge reduction in the water bodies in Anavilhanas archipelago. The results shown in this paper can be strategic for the management actions in areas affected by extreme climatic events.
